New To Contact Lenses? Here Are Our Top 5 Tips!
For an estimated 56 million North Americans, contact lenses are the preferred form of vision correction. If you've just started wearing contact lenses, here are 5 tips to help you adjust quickly and care for your new lenses.
Advice About Contact Lenses from Dayton Optometric Center
1. Learn How to Tell if Your Contact Lens Is Inside Out
Place the lens on your index fingertip and look carefully at its shape. The edge should point upward like the rim of a teacup. If the edge is flared outward like a blooming flower, the lens is inside out. Some lenses also have tiny laser markings that read correctly when the lens is properly oriented.
2. Never Use a Substitute for Contact Lens Solution
Your eye doctor will recommend the appropriate solution for your eyes and lenses. Even if you run out of contact lens solution, never rinse your lenses with water, and never use saliva to moisten or clean them. Using substances other than the recommended solution can introduce harmful microbes and cause a serious infection.
3. If Your Contact Lenses Feel Uncomfortable, Take Them Out!
Contact lenses are supposed to be comfortable. If you experience discomfort, remove your contacts and rinse them with the solution or rewetting drops recommended by your eye doctor. If your eyes still feel irritated, don't reinsert the lenses. If the problem persists, contact your eye doctor.
4. Wear Contact Lens-Friendly Makeup
Choose hypoallergenic makeup and water-based formulas around your eyes. Keep your eye closed during application, don't apply eyeliner to the inner lid, replace eye makeup every 3 months, never share eye makeup, and always remove your contact lenses before removing your makeup.
5. Stick to the Hygiene Guidelines
Always thoroughly wash and dry your hands before handling your contact lenses. Try to avoid oily or heavily scented hand soaps. After washing, dry your hands with a lint-free towel.
Bonus Tip: Get an Eye Exam
While this advice can be very helpful, it doesn't replace an in-person exam with your eye doctor. If you have any questions or concerns, call (937) 228-2020. Dayton Optometric Center will be happy to schedule you for a contact lens exam and fitting.
